Three Emirati design labels are in the running to create uniforms for more than 30,000 Expo 2020 Dubai volunteers and team members after submitting designs that combine the UAE’s heritage with cutting-edge styles.
The shortlisted finalists chosen are By Laha, that includes designers Hamda Abbas, Sara Mustafa and Zainab AlShaikh, Arshys, led by designer Arshia Alam Khan, and Twisted Roots, founded by Latifa Al Gurg.
The collections cover an ensemble of jackets, hats, bags, ties, scarves, kandoras, ghutras, abayas and shaylas.
The concepts were judged by a panel based on representation of Emirati culture, practicality and sustainable elements.
The three finalists each received Dh50,000 and were asked to create samples that were presented on Wednesday during a showcase event at Expo 2020’s newly opened House of Volunteers.
The uniform design competition was launched in September to engage the UAE’s fashion community.

“As the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region, Expo 2020 offers an invaluable opportunity to showcase our creativity, values and traditions on a global stage,” said Hayat Shamsuddin, vice president, arts and culture, content and programming, Expo 2020 Dubai, and a member of the evaluation panel.
The designers were evaluated by a panel that comprised of design, fashion experts and senior Expo 2020 officials.
The expo organisers have also chosen Rosterfy, a management solution platform, to support the 60,000 workforce network.
Thousands of volunteers will work on site across a total of 1.2 million shifts over the six-month period from October 2020 to April 2021 during an event being described as one of the world’s largest volunteer programmes.
The workforce management platform of Rosterfy was selected by the expo to manage recruitment screening of volunteers, automated matching to the roles they are best suited to and engaging the workforce throughout the event to show the difference they are making.
