The National, the leading quality news organisation in the Middle East, is looking for a Deputy Foreign Editor to join our Abu Dhabi-based newsroom. Candidates should have a deep knowledge of regional politics, diplomacy, society and culture, an eye for a story, and the ability to see through projects from beginning to end – as well as expert editing skills.
Experience running or helping to run a foreign desk at a significant news outlet is required – the role would involve supervision of a large operation in Abu Dhabi and a network of bureaux and correspondents around the world. Multimedia and social media skills are also an advantage.
The National has developed a reputation as an influential provider of news, analysis and comment on regional affairs in the Arab world and beyond. We are currently undergoing a major expansion with new bureaux in Beirut, Cairo, Riyadh and Washington and an expanded London team. The global operation will continue to be run from Abu Dhabi.

An Assistant Foreign Editor would join our expanding international news desk in Abu Dhabi. Candidates should have a strong grounding in the Middle East with previous experience covering regional news and experience working on a foreign desk, as a freelancer or as a correspondent.
Candidates should have the ability to perform at all stages of the editing process, from generating ideas, commissioning stories and seeing the piece through to publication.
They should be able to work with correspondents and freelancers around the world and handle desk copy. They require a willingness to work shifts that can vary, including weekends, as well as write compelling breaking news and features. Knowledge of Arabic would be an advantage.
The National is expanding its foreign coverage with a growing network of correspondents in the field. As such, the Assistant Foreign Editor would help this expansion, working closely with writers to develop long term features, investigative reporting as well as breaking news.
The role comes with responsibilities to liaise between print and online, plan coverage, work on reporting trips and deputise for the Foreign Editor and Deputy Foreign Editor when they are absent.
A good working knowledge of best practice in web publishing, SEO and understanding trends would be useful.
