Mourinho will quit if Chelsea fail, says Premier League manager

Portuguese insists he will not hang around a club after three or four trophy-less seasons ahead of Hull City opener on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho insists he will walk away from Chelsea if his Midas touch deserts him.

The Portuguese's second spell as Chelsea manager begins at home to Hull on Sunday with his side many people's favourites for the English Premier League title.

Mourinho plans to develop the existing talent in the first-team squad, on the periphery and in the academy and stay at Stamford Bridge in the long term.

But the former Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager will not hang around if success does not follow.

"I'm not the kind of person to be at the same club three, four years without winning a trophy," he said.

"In this case, I don't need the club to say 'we're not happy with you, goodbye'.

"I will be the first one to say: 'I gave everything I could, but I didn't succeed, so let's go and try a different thing'."

Mourinho added: "Of course it's about winning trophies. My DNA didn't change, my nature didn't change."

The Portuguese does not anticipate such a scenario will unfold at a club where he enjoys his relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy, including owner Roman Abramovich.

"My feeling is when you work well and with big empathy - and in this club you have big empathy in between the different sectors of the club - I think the trophies will arrive naturally without obsession," he added.

"They will arrive naturally, based on this stability."

Mourinho signed a four-year contract on his return in June after a near six-year absence which included spells as manager at Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Rarely has the former Porto manager stayed at a club long, eager to fulfil his ambition of testing his credentials in Europe's top leagues, but he says his flitting has now come to an end.

"I'm happy to stay until the club is happy and that I'm happy," he said.

"When I came for the first time I was still incomplete in my passion for this football adventure, of going around and trying to win championships and trying to make myself better by going to other football countries.

"In this moment I don't have this ambition, my ambition is to give everything I have to my club and to the league.

"I don't see myself in Spain coaching another club, I don't see myself in Italy coaching another club than Inter, I don't see myself in other leagues, because these are the leagues where I'm most loved and I was very, very curious to work in.

"And in this country, my big connection is with Chelsea Football Club. I will try for the club to be happy with me and I hope at the end of this contract, we both want to keep together."

Given Chelsea's hire-and-fire policy, Mourinho was asked where he finds the conviction that he will be given time.

He shares the same vision of Abramovich, technical director Michael Emenalo and others that Chelsea are building for the future.

No longer are Chelsea 'buying' the title, instead the business plan appears to be buying young players with potential to become global superstars.

"They need some stability," Mourinho added.

"In this moment the club is ready for that and I'm ready for that."

Previously every purchase made by Chelsea was scrutinised and Mourinho hopes the same scrutiny will take place elsewhere, such as at big-spending Manchester City.

"I remember in my time here that all the pressure was on us, every one of us was permanently speaking about Mr Abramovich's millions, this player cost that, the other player cost that," Mourinho said.

"Hopefully in this moment you [the media] turn your attention to other sides. It looks like financial fair play didn't arrive there.

"Give us the protection you gave to other teams during the years, saying we're a young team, they need time, they need to improve, they need to make mistakes. Hopefully you are fair.

"You say 'Jose work with calm, no pressure, take your boys and do your best'."

Mourinho is excited ahead of an expected emotional return to Stamford Bridge.

"I was a bit [emotional] with Inter and I was an opponent [in March 2010], so now to go back, [I am] emotional for sure," he said.

"That's what I have to control - emotions, but not nerves. I want to play matches. I want big matches. I don't like friendlies, I don't like pre-season.

"I've been waiting for this since I arrived, so I'm not nervous."
