Attacker is jailed after admitting carrying out brutal assault in row over money

A man required life-saving surgery after being stabbed in the head, neck and chest and battered with a golf club in a row over cash.

The attacker, 21, from Sri Lanka, launched a brutal assault after arranging to meet the man, 33, at a bus station near to Dubai's Burj Al Arab hotel.

He was spotted fleeing the scene in a bloodstained shirt and was later arrested by police in Al Satwa.

He admitted carrying out the vicious attack, telling officers the victim owed him money.

The incident took place on August 18 of last year.

The victim, also from Sri Lanka, was found lying in a pool of blood by a passer-by and was taken to hospital where he underwent an operation that saved his life.

Dubai Criminal Court heard the victim had been contacted by the defendant and met with him and two other men, all of whom believed he can help to issue visas for family members.

When he said he was not able to help them, he was set upon by the defendant.

“I told them I could not help them and advised them to seek the help of another person. Then all of a sudden, one of them started stabbing me,” said the man in court.

A policeman said the defendant readily admitted carrying out the assault.
"He told us that the victim owed him money and wouldn't pay him back," said the officer.

The man denied a charge of attempted murder when he first appeared before the court in February.

He was convicted of the charge at a hearing on Wednesday and sentenced to one year in prison.

He will be deported after serving his jail term.
