Sightline with Tim Marshall: An Afghanistan peace deal is nearing

US President Donald Trump’s senior negotiator in Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, said this week that a peace deal had been hammered out between the US and Taliban “in principle”.

The war in Afghanistan has been America's longest and most costly after nearly two decades of conflict. The US has 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and provides air support for Afghan soldiers.

The National's Tim Marshall explains how the situation is anything but straightforward as the violence continues.
