DUBAI // A 37-year-old engineer threatened to kill his wife if she did not drop her divorce case, Dubai Criminal Court was told on Sunday.
Prosecutors said that on October 17 last year, the Egyptian insulted his wife with foul language and physically assaulted her, causing injury. He then threatened to kill her if she did not drop the divorce case, it is alleged.
The Egyptian housewife, 37, said that her husband beat her up and insulted her using inappropriate language in an attempt to force her not only to drop the divorce case but also to give up the ownership of a plot of land in Egypt.
“I saw as he beat her up and heard him insulting her using very bad words,” said a 38-year-old witness, a fellow Egyptian.
The wife reported her husband to Al Barsha police station.
The defendant was not present in court to face charges of issuing death threats, physical assault and insulting the victim.
A verdict is expected on April 11.
