Three fraudsters who were caught red handed trying to sell counterfeit cash to an undercover policeman have each been jailed for two years.
The trio, a Sudanese businessman, 47, an Egyptian electrician, 31, and a Syrian unemployed man, 28, fell into a trap laid out by police when trying to offload $30,500 of fake American currency.
Two of the defendants agreed to meet the police officer, posing as a potential buyer, near Century Mall in Deira on November 11 of last year.
Police who were lying in wait arrested the men as the transaction was taking place.
“When questioned, the Syrian accused said that his role was only to find a buyer,” said a policeman.
The three men denied possessing counterfeit currency and trying to sell it when they appeared in court in November.
However, they were all convicted and sentenced to two years in prison, to be followed by deportation, and were each fined Dh200,000.
