MANCHESTER // Louis van Gaal revealed he had apologised to referee Craig Pawson for a crowd-pleasing dive in front of the fourth official by claiming his emotions got the better of him for once.
The Manchester United manager, who usually watches matches impassively, believes he overreacted in his team's 3-2 win over Arsenal when, aggrieved by what he felt was diving by the visiting players, he flung himself to the ground next to an unimpressed fourth official Mike Dean.

The Old Trafford public sang his name in appreciation but Van Gaal said: “Great, but the fans are not always wise. That was too emotional. It happens not too much. Normally I am sitting on my bench and I have a lot of criticism because I am sitting on my bench. I have apologised to the referee and the linesman. I have to control my emotions.”
Van Gaal admitted Marcus Rashford had surpassed his expectations by scoring twice on his league debut, just as he had done on his United bow against Midtjylland on Thursday.
“It’s unbelievable when you are 18 years old and you come in. What he has showed in the second match is already an improvement of the first and that is special.”
Ander Herrera got United’s other goal while Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil struck for Arsenal, who have not won at Old Trafford in the league since 2006.
Arsene Wenger conceded his side require an immediate response if their title hopes are not to wither after defeat to a United team missing 12 injured players left them five points behind leaders Leicester City.
“It is still possible but the answer will have to come quick and strong,” he said. “We dropped three important points and we have to show we can fight and bounce back on Wednesday night and not feel sorry for ourselves.”
Wenger said he had no regrets about his attacking team selection and argued his side were not beaten because he picked three quick forwards in his starting XI.
“No, because I am convinced that Welbeck, [Theo] Walcott and [Alexis] Sanchez can defend well,” he said. “I don’t think the strikers were at fault for the goals. We suffered on crosses.”
He said “the regret” is that despite “having so much of the ball we conceded three goals”.
