A mother who guns for the big time

ABU DHABI // Inas Raid Obeidi proved herself to be a super shot by winning last night in the women's section of the Caracal Shooting Club Competition.

And the mother of 12-year-old triplets would love to see where she could go in her chosen sport - once she can find a bit more spare time to hone her skills.

Sudden death is not a phrase normally welcome at a competition involving guns, yet it was the only way to find the male and female winners of the second year of this tournament.

Both Obeidi and male champion Mubarak Rashed al Mansoori were taken to a play-off before being declared winners after superb scores of 93 and 95 respectively out of 100.

The team event was more a straightforward affair with the male category being topped by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs team (442) with Tawazun (422) and the Western Region Representative Office (403) coming in second and third.

And in the female section, Tawazun (465) retained their title from last year, with the Ministry of Presidential Affairs (460) and the Executive Affairs Authority team (445) taking the next two places.

Obeidi from Abu Dhabi was the star for Tawazun and would love to make this hobby a more serious pastime.

She said: "I was shaking in the play-off so I'm really happy to have won the individual award. I have only been shooting for a year and I'm surprised to have got so good so quickly.

"I would like to take part in bigger competitions. I have triplet girls - I'm a Supermum - so that takes up a lot of my time. But maybe one day I can concentrate more on the sport as I really enjoy it.

"Would I think about The Olympics? Who knows what will happen."

Men's winner al Mansoori, also from the capital and who was part of the Crown Prince Court team, was more cool in his play-off. He said: "I was very calm, which you need to be when holding a gun. I was confident before coming into the tournament of doing well and I'm delighted to have won."

The competition is for the government employees and the teams taking part were; Abu Dhabi Judiciary Department, Executive Affairs Authority, Ministry of Presidential Affairs, The Office of Brand Abu Dhabi, Crown Prince Court, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce, Abu Dhabi Media, Tawazun, Western Region Representative Office and Western Region Development Council.

Libya's Gold

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.

The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.

Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites

The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.

It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.

“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.

The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
