Suhour review: Agadir at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa

We check out Agadir's suhour at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa

Suhour at the the hotel's signature Moroccan restaurant is a retreat from the raucous affairs of ballrooms and buffet stations.

As well as eating in the restaurant or the accompanying Ramadan tent, customers also have the choice of choosing between the special Ramadan menu or the standard al a carte dishes.

It is recommended to mix and match.

One must start with the avocado and date juice (Dh25) available on both menus.

While the combination is not original, Agadir’s version sings because of the freshness of the ingredients. Normally juice stores attempt to cover ripe avocados by inserting ice cream or milk into the mix. Agadir’s version relies solely on the produce and the results are a smooth treat.

Regular visitors of Agadir know what to expect from their salads (Dh35).

For those looking for something to nibble on whilst playing cards, the small salads, also available on both menus, definitely keep the conversation going.

Beautifully presented, the standout is the Touktuka and the Zaalouk. The former tantilises courtesy of that green pepper while garlic oil and spices gives the Zaalouk a decent kick.

Mechoui

For those looking for the main dishes you can’t go past the ala carte-only Mechoui (Dh260).

Served on a bed of salad, the roasted shoulder lamb is beautifully tender and is is a hearty dish (serving two people) when accompanied by the aromatic saffron rice.

Pastilla Bil D’Jaj

My favourite is the Pastilla Bil D’Jaj (Dh60), a famous Moroccan dish where filo pastry is filled with chicken, crushed almonds, orange blossom and coated with cinnamon sugar.

To say the ala carte dish is a riot of flavours is an understatement. With each bite you taste all the elements; the chicken shreds gets a welcome crunch courtesy of those almonds before the final kickers arrives with the sweetness of the cinnamon sugar. It’s brilliant and a must try upon any Agadir visit.

We elected for a fruit platter for desert. Served with mint-tea, the platter - with it's mixture of lychee, passion fruit and mango -  is an ideal way to end the affair or start that next card game.

Agadir is located at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa. For details go to www.agadirabudhabi.com.

Stat Fourteen Fourteen of the past 15 Test matches in the UAE have been decided on the final day. Both of the previous two Tests at Dubai International Stadium have been settled in the last session. Pakistan won with less than an hour to go against West Indies last year. Against England in 2015, there were just three balls left.

Key battle - Azhar Ali v Rangana Herath Herath may not quite be as flash as Muttiah Muralitharan, his former spin-twin who ended his career by taking his 800th wicket with his final delivery in Tests. He still has a decent sense of an ending, though. He won the Abu Dhabi match for his side with 11 wickets, the last of which was his 400th in Tests. It was not the first time he has owned Pakistan, either. A quarter of all his Test victims have been Pakistani. If Pakistan are going to avoid a first ever series defeat in the UAE, Azhar, their senior batsman, needs to stand up and show the way to blunt Herath.
