ABU DHABI // A woman was fined Dh300 by the Federal Supreme Court after insulting a man online
The incident occurred in July last year, when the defendant used the acronym (SOB) to insult a man on an online platform.
The man then reported her to the authorities.
During investigations, the defendant confessed to using the curse words on the Internet. However, during previous hearings she said that what she meant was “you are a big stupid man”.
The court found her explicit words to be “clear and with purpose” and degrading to the victim. She was sentenced to a month in prison but after appealing the decision, was ordered to pay the Dh300 fine instead.
Under the UAE's cyber crime laws, anyone who defames or damages a person's reputation online is expected to receive a prison sentence and a fine.
