ABU DHABI // Top scholars and dignitaries gathered in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque yesterday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of the country's founder, Sheikh Zayed.
The event, hosted by the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments (AWQAF), began after the taraweeh prayers in the evening.
Many in attendance were part of the "Guests of the Nation" delegation, an annual roster of Islamic scholars from around the world who deliver their latest research and lectures to local audiences at mosques and other venues.
"As this occasion comes to pass, it is our patriotic and moral duty to give the due right of loyalty and recognition to the founder of this nation, its unity and renaissance. He continues to lead us today," said a statement from Dr Hamdan Muslim al Mazrouei, head of AWQAF.
Sheikh Zayed is the founding President of the United Arab Emirates, which declared itself an independent state made up of six emirates in 1971.
The seventh emirate, Ras al Khaimah, joined in 1972.
Yesterday's commemoration is based on the Islamic calendar, as Sheikh Zayed passed away on the 19th day of Ramdan. He was 86 years of age.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
It was a tough comparison from a year earlier, when the UK was in lockdown, but on a two-year basis its retail division, a joint venture with Marks&Spencer, rose 31.7 per cent over the quarter.
The group added that a 15 per cent drop in customer basket size offset an 11.6. per cent rise in the number of customer transactions.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.
