Whether or not Andy Murray is No 1 in the world at the time, tennis fans in Abu Dhabi will see him in action at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships on the second day of the event next month.
As the top seed, Murray receives a bye and will play the winner of the opening day match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Goffin on Friday, December 30. On the other side of a draw that was unveiled by Tsonga on Monday in Abu Dhabi will be Milos Raonic, who will face the winner of the second opening day match between Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych.
Murray, a two-time Mubadala winner, has been the form player on the men’s tour through the second half of the season. Last week he replaced Novak Djokovic to reach top spot for the first time in his career.

Whether he arrives in Abu Dhabi in the same position will depend on how he fares at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals, which began in London on Monday. He has to outperform Djokovic at the tournament to stay No 1. Even accounting for Djokovic’s little dip in form that will not be easy – the Serb has won this title four years in a row.
Tsonga, a crowd favourite in Abu Dhabi, flew in to the capital specially for the draw and will open the tournament on the first day, on Thursday. He will be competing in his fifth Mubadala tournament.
“I’m really happy to be here, I always enjoy coming here,” he said. “For me it’s the best warm-up for the Australian Open. You play against the best players in the world, you can compare your preparation to their preparation. The conditions are always good, we always get a good welcome so it’s great to be back again.
“All the guys who come here really want to test their games. They play full tennis. It’s a competition that is hard to win and I know because I’ve never won it.”
The prospect of watching Nadal play, potentially, on all three days will be another one fans will look out for. Nadal is a three-time winner in Abu Dhabi and arrives as the defending champion and will play on the opening day for the first time in his eight appearances here.
He is ranked eighth in the world currently, however, which means a defense would entail beating Berdych, Raonic and, possibly, Murray over the weekend. Among the six players, the 11th-ranked Goffin is the only one appearing at Mubadala for the first time.

A High Court judge issued an interim order on Friday suspending a decision by Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots to direct a stop to Brexit agri-food checks at Northern Ireland ports.
Mr Justice Colton said he was making the temporary direction until a judicial review of the minister's unilateral action this week to order a halt to port checks that are required under the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Civil servants have yet to implement the instruction, pending legal clarity on their obligations, and checks are continuing.
Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid

With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.

$1,000 award for 1,000 days on madrasa portal
Daily cash awards of $1,000 dollars will sweeten the Madrasa e-learning project by tempting more pupils to an education portal to deepen their understanding of math and sciences.
School children are required to watch an educational video each day and answer a question related to it. They then enter into a raffle draw for the $1,000 prize.
“We are targeting everyone who wants to learn. This will be $1,000 for 1,000 days so there will be a winner every day for 1,000 days,” said Sara Al Nuaimi, project manager of the Madrasa e-learning platform that was launched on Tuesday by the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to reach Arab pupils from kindergarten to grade 12 with educational videos.
“The objective of the Madrasa is to become the number one reference for all Arab students in the world. The 5,000 videos we have online is just the beginning, we have big ambitions. Today in the Arab world there are 50 million students. We want to reach everyone who is willing to learn.”
