Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina will meet in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after the latter upset an ailing Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals on Friday.
All three take the Sport cover for the Saturday, February 25, 2017 edition of The National.
Ahmed Rizvi reports from Dubai:
Kerber, who came here as the world No 2 trailing Serena Williams by 665 points in the rankings, would have been back at No 1 if she had won the final. A Premier 5 tournament this year, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title is worth 900 points.
A knee injury put a damper on her hopes, but Kerber was unwilling to give up. Hobbling, she fought back from 2-5 down in the second set, winning four games on the trot, but Svitolina eventually prevailed in the tiebreak winning 6-3, 7-6.
“I don’t know what’s with my knee now, but I feel pain a little bit,” Kerber said. “Yeah, but in the end, I tried my best. This is how I am, and I’m always trying my best until the end.”
The National will have full coverage of Saturday's final.
