Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi shortlisted for Globe Soccer Awards player of the year

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been named among the nominees for the 2016 Globe Soccer Awards player of the year.

Held in Dubai on December 27-28, the Globe Soccer Awards are part of the International Sports Conference where figures from the world of football converge on the emirate to discuss the big topics dominating the sport.

Entering its seventh edition, the Globe Soccer Awards were created to recognise the best contributors to football — globally and regionally — both on and off the field.

Once again, Barcelona superstar Messi, the current holder of the award, is on the six-man shortlist for best player. The Argentina forward, has enjoyed another standout season for Barcelona, leading his club to the domestic double of Primera Liga and Copa del Rey titles.

Ronaldo, who won the award in 2014, takes his place on the shortlist following a year of success for club and country. The Portuguese forward was a central figure in Real Madrid’s march to their 11th European Cup before helping his national team to victory at Euro 2016.

Ronaldo’s clubmate Gareth Bale has also been nominated for his part in Real Madrid’s success as well as his inspired role in Wales’ impressive Euro 2016 campaign where they reached the semi-finals.

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann — player of the tournament at Euro 2016 and top-scorer with six goals — takes his place on the shortlist, as does England striker Jamie Vardy for his 24-goal Premier League season that helped Leicester City achieve the most unlikely of title triumphs.

The final player on the shortlist is Messi’s international colleague Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentina forward equalled an 87-year-old record when he scored 36 goals in Serie A during the 2015/16 season for Napoli. He has since joined title rivals Juventus for an Italian transfer record fee.

Tips for job-seekers
  • Do not submit your application through the Easy Apply button on LinkedIn. Employers receive between 600 and 800 replies for each job advert on the platform. If you are the right fit for a job, connect to a relevant person in the company on LinkedIn and send them a direct message.
  • Make sure you are an exact fit for the job advertised. If you are an HR manager with five years’ experience in retail and the job requires a similar candidate with five years’ experience in consumer, you should apply. But if you have no experience in HR, do not apply for the job.

School counsellors on mental well-being

Schools counsellors in Abu Dhabi have put a number of provisions in place to help support pupils returning to the classroom next week.

Many children will resume in-person lessons for the first time in 10 months and parents previously raised concerns about the long-term effects of distance learning.

Schools leaders and counsellors said extra support will be offered to anyone that needs it. Additionally, heads of years will be on hand to offer advice or coping mechanisms to ease any concerns.

“Anxiety this time round has really spiralled, more so than from the first lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic,” said Priya Mitchell, counsellor at The British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi.

“Some have got used to being at home don’t want to go back, while others are desperate to get back.

“We have seen an increase in depressive symptoms, especially with older pupils, and self-harm is starting younger.

“It is worrying and has taught us how important it is that we prioritise mental well-being.”

Ms Mitchell said she was liaising more with heads of year so they can support and offer advice to pupils if the demand is there.

The school will also carry out mental well-being checks so they can pick up on any behavioural patterns and put interventions in place to help pupils.

At Raha International School, the well-being team has provided parents with assessment surveys to see how they can support students at home to transition back to school.

“They have created a Well-being Resource Bank that parents have access to on information on various domains of mental health for students and families,” a team member said.

“Our pastoral team have been working with students to help ease the transition and reduce anxiety that [pupils] may experience after some have been nearly a year off campus.

"Special secondary tutorial classes have also focused on preparing students for their return; going over new guidelines, expectations and daily schedules.”
