Medeor 24x7 Hospital in Abu Dhabi will be offering free Ramadan health clinics for people fasting during the holy month.

The clinics will cover headaches, digestive disorders, heart care and diet, and are intended to “help families stay healthy and ease any discomfort while observing the fast,” says Dr Lalu Chacko, chief medical officer at the hospital. They will run daily throughout Ramadan.

“Islam encourages Muslims to be mindful of their health. The Prophet said: ‘Take advantage of the good health before illnesses afflict you’,” says consultant gastroenterologist Dr Deiar A Habib.

“Overeating can not only harm the body but it is thought also to interfere with a person’s spiritual growth during the month. A diet that has less than a normal amount of food, but is sufficiently balanced, will keep a person healthy and active during the month of Ramadan. The diet should be simple and not differ too much from one’s normal everyday diet. It should contain foods from all the major food groups.”

Cardiology specialist Dr Mohammed Rahi Al Hasnawi says eating less food after breaking the fast is key to the production of good cholesterol and reducing discomfort. “Three essential things are to be kept in mind during Ramadan – food, medication and exercise,” he says.

“Eating a lot of food is a bad habit. Add to that sleeping immediately after the meal intake, and it can even precipitate a heart attack.” He also advises against changing the medication intake or frequency without consulting a doctor.

Medeor 24x7’s doctors have these suggestions for better health during Ramadan:

• Divide your food into four small meals between iftar and suhoor

• Avoid excessive intake of red meat and sweets (or anything sweet, such as sugary drinks)

• Choose milk and milk products that are low in fat

• Sip water frequently between iftar and suhoor

• Do not sleep immediately after a meal

• Take any prescribed medication during iftar or suhoor

• Continue taking prescribed medication

• Pray. It’s a good way to maintain a healthy body and mind

• Maintain physical activity through short walks

The Ramadan clinic at Medeor 24x7 Hospital, Abu Dhabi runs until the end of Ramadan, Saturday to Thursday 10am to midnight, and Friday 6pm to midnight. Appointments are required and can be booked by calling 800 900 600.
