The welcome
After navigating my way through the busy streets of Deira, I find the hotel and, as it’s a Friday, I’m able to nab a parking spot right outside. I’m assisted by a doorman and head into the lobby to the check-in counter. That is relatively smooth, although it seems to take a little longer than expected, but once the paperwork is completed, I’m given the keys and make my way upstairs, surprisingly, without any offer of assistance.
The neighbourhood
Situated right in the heart of Deira, this new Hilton property provides guests as much tradition and history as they can handle. The 183-room hotel is surrounded by bustling streets jam-packed with souqs, mosques, museums and shops. The diplomatic district isn’t too far away and the hotel is also a handy five kilometres from Dubai International Airport.
The room
My 27-square-metre junior suite is comfortable enough, although the lack of natural light in the living area is a little depressing. The window is narrow, but the bedroom has a full window that allows more light. The decor is neutral and calming, and there’s a desk and a sofa-bed. The bathroom is too cramped and poorly designed for my liking.
The service
Very attentive and friendly. Any time I come into contact with the staff, they go above and beyond to offer their time and knowledge. The chef comes out to meet me during dinner and addresses my food requirements personally, which is reassuring for a diner with specific dietary needs such as myself.
The scene
The clientele for the property comes across as quite business-orientated, although I do see a few couples during my overnight stay. It’s relatively quiet throughout, although I’m told it’s at about 60 per cent occupancy. The pool area and gym are barely occupied and the lounge/bar area is pretty quiet, too – at times, it almost feels like I have the place to myself.
The food
As is the case with most Hilton Garden Inn properties, dinner is served at the chain’s Garden Grille & Bar restaurant. As previously mentioned, my questions about gluten-free options prompt a visit from the head chef, who’s very helpful and offers some mouthwatering suggestions for me to try. I opt for the traditional butter chicken with rice (Dh65), while my friend chooses the Angus beef sirloin steak with fries and vegetables (Dh100), and despite not being asked how she wants it cooked, she eats every last bite. Breakfast (Dh66) is quite basic but varied enough. There are waffle and omelette stations, hot buffet options and a selection of fruits and cold meats. I opt for an omelette and some cheeses, which hit the spot.
Loved
The attentive restaurant staff and the views from the rooftop pool area.
Hated
The lack of windows and natural light in the living area of our room, and the constant air-traffic noise overhead.
The verdict
An affordable option just minutes from the international airport, which is also close to souqs and the more historic part of Dubai.
The bottom line
Rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn Dubai Al Muraqabat (www.hiltongardeninn.hilton.com) cost from Dh575 per room per night, including taxes, breakfast and Wi-Fi.
