Croatia may have lost the World Cup final but it’s still winning when it comes to tourism with Emirates and its low-cost sister airline flydubai partnering up to offer a winter service to the capital of Zagreb.

From December 2, until the end of March 2019 flydubai will operate flights to the city of just over one million people using its Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. After that Emirates will take over the service.

Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia and packed with historical monuments, museums and art galleries. It is located on the southern slopes of Medvednica Mountain along the banks of the Sava River and offers travellers a unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals.

During the winter months, flights will depart Dubai at 10am and arrive in Zagreb at 1.15pm, with the return flight leaving Zagreb at 2.30pm and returning at 11pm.

Flydubai flights to Zagreb will depart from Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport. Direct flights from Dubai to the destination take about six hours.

The currency conundrum

Russ Mould, investment director at online trading platform AJ Bell, says almost every major currency has challenges right now. “The US has a huge budget deficit, the euro faces political friction and poor growth, sterling is bogged down by Brexit, China’s renminbi is hit by debt fears while slowing Chinese growth is hurting commodity exporters like Australia and Canada.”

Most countries now actively want a weak currency to make their exports more competitive. “China seems happy to let the renminbi drift lower, the Swiss are still running quantitative easing at full tilt and central bankers everywhere are actively talking down their currencies or offering only limited support," says Mr Mould.

This is a race to the bottom, and everybody wants to be a winner.

Key figures in the life of the fort

Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa (ruled 1761-1793) Built Qasr Al Hosn as a watchtower to guard over the only freshwater well on Abu Dhabi island.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1793-1816) Expanded the tower into a small fort and transferred his ruling place of residence from Liwa Oasis to the fort on the island.

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Shakhbut (ruled 1818-1833) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further as Abu Dhabi grew from a small village of palm huts to a town of more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) Repaired and fortified the fort.

Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon (ruled 1845-1855) Turned Qasr Al Hosn into a strong two-storied structure.

Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa (ruled 1855-1909) Expanded Qasr Al Hosn further to reflect the emirate's increasing prominence.

Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan (ruled 1928-1966) Renovated and enlarged Qasr Al Hosn, adding a decorative arch and two new villas.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (ruled 1966-2004) Moved the royal residence to Al Manhal palace and kept his diwan at Qasr Al Hosn.
