Tried and tested: RAW Coffee Company’s coffee and tonic water

It sounds like a strange combination: cold brew coffee with sparkling tonic water.

But the resulting “coffee tonic” - aka the new iced coffee - is light and refreshing.

The trend, which emerged in a big way in the US last summer, has landed in the UAE at the RAW Coffee Company in Al Quoz.

There, Nicaraguan coffee is brewed at room temerature for 18 to 20 hours in a tody, which extracts the bitter acids and oils that often get left behind. The resultant coffee is strong, but not harsh on the palatte.

RAW, which serves only locally roasted, organic and ethically traded Arabica coffee at its roastery in Al Quoz 1, is pairing it with Fentiman’s Tonic Water. And ice, of course.

Raw is open Thursday 8am to 5pm. Friday 9am to 5pm

UAE currency: the story behind the money in your pockets
Strait of Hormuz

Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.

The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.

Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.
