There’s nothing like a handcrafted piece of wooden furniture to create that “homey” feel. Unfortunately, a high-quality piece will cost. There is a second option: staining your own furniture, which means investing in a cheaper piece, then adding personalised touches.
The process isn’t arduous. First, choose a piece that’s raw and unfinished (from somewhere like Ikea). Fill any holes with putty and lightly sand the entire product. Make sure to go with the grain. Wipe away any residual sawdust with mineral turpentine for an oil-based finish; or methylated spirits for a water-based finish.
Once you’ve chosen your preferred stain, stir it thoroughly and apply with a brush. Use fluid strokes, going with the grain, ensuring even application. Once covered, wait about five minutes before wiping away the stain, using circular motions, with a lint-free rag. When the surface is a consistent colour, leave it to dry for eight hours. Wipe it down and brush on a clear polyurethane coat with long strokes. Leave for eight hours, then lightly sand the surface and apply a second coat of polyurethane. Leave for six hours to dry.
