A (black) mirror is about to be held up to the way we view technology and society once more. Award-winning TV series Black Mirror has dropped a brand-new trailer for its fifth season, revealing that fans can expect three new episodes next month.
The anthology series, created by humorist, critic and writer Charlie Brooker, is a sci-fi smash hit, that examines modern life in satirical, standalone episodes. The show, which passed hands from Channel 4 to Netflix in 2015, features hour-long-plus episodes set in the present or near future, that most frequently focus on how technology has and can continue to dictate society, usually with unsettling consequences.
Season five will feature a trilogy of episodes, the new trailer revealed, and will launch on June 5 on the streaming platform. The just-unveiled clip also gave fans a glimpse at the stars appearing in the new series of Black Mirror, which has previously enlisted actors such as Daniel Kaluuya, Jon Hamm, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jodie Whittaker and Domhnall Gleeson.
Fleabag and Sherlock favourite Andrew Scott makes a sizeable appearance in the trailer, suggesting he will be the focal point of one episode, while pop star and actress Miley Cyrus looks to be playing a celebrity in another. Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Madison Davenport and Topher Grace also feature in the clip.
Specific plot lines for the season weren't extensively unbagged in the trailer though, as expected, tech features rather heavily.
"Everywhere you look people are hooked on the things," exclaims an agitated Scott in one scene, as he pretends to press buttons on an imaginary phone. The trailer also shows a lonely teen girl talking to a robot, which tells her she "looks incredible". However, the girl can later be heard saying: "It’s not a doll. That thing’s poison."
The last season of Black Mirror was released in December 2017 though a full-length film, Bandersnatch, came out in December 2018; the choose-your-own-ending adventure followed a video-game programmer in the '80s.
