UAE and Jordan stress need to end Israel-Palestine conflict and withdraw Israeli forces from occupied land

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and Jordan's King Abdullah discussed the need to return to Israel's pre-1967 border to achieve peace.

In a meeting in Amman on Tuesday the two leaders talked about investment and co-operation, including the UAE's Dh367.3 million grant in support of Jordanian businesses.

The leaders underlined the need to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine based on the two-state solution and the Arab peace initiative - an bid to normalise relations between Jews and Arabs in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories.

In a statement Sheikh Mohamed reiterated "the Jordanian-Emirati consensus on the necessity of activating joint Arab action and strengthening it in the face of the challenges that threaten the region" and the need to "consolidate its fraternal relations with Jordan in light of the challenges facing the region".

Israel's army launched air strikes on the Gaza strip last month after two rockets from the Palestinian territory hit an Israeli city. The exchange of fire was the latest in a series of increases in violence between the besieged strip and its Jewish neighbours.

Meanwhile in a move that further compounded the decades-old conflict, President Donald Trump relocated the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in May. According to the 1993 Israeli-Palestinian agreement, the final status of the disputed city of Jerusalem was to be negotiated.

Instead, the new embassy suggested the process was dead, fuelling anger.

The two leaders went on to stress the importance of maintaining open co-ordination and consultation between Jordan and the UAE. The long-standing bond between the two countries was further reinforced when King Abdullah announced he would rename the Jordan’s Rapid Intervention brigade – part of the country’s armed forces – to the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Rapid Intervention Brigade.

Sheikh Mohamed is expected to travel to Paris on Wednesday where he will hold meetings with President Emmanuel Macron.

Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Akira Back Dubai

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as,  “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.
