ABU DHABI // A group of volunteers is planning to give labourers a special Valentine's gift to show how much their work is appreciated.
Until Saturday, Dh14 will buy a Valentine's Care Package for Labourers on the LivingSocial website. It includes a sandwich, dessert, apple, juice and water.
"We wanted to do something special for Valentine's Day," said Suparna Mathur, 27, a social entrepreneur in Abu Dhabi who connects charities with businesses that can further the cause.
"… it's not only about loving those in your life, but showing love to everyone who needs it."
The event is being held through Worker Bus Raids, a fun event where treat bags are put together for labourers, who are presented with them as they board their buses outside construction sites.
The packages will be distributed on building sites next Tuesday.
"As an Emirati, my goal is to show that we really care," said Mariam Al Mazrouei, 24, one of four volunteers for the initiative. "They work long hours and we appreciate what they're doing."
Ms Al Mazrouei and her family have been involved in the Bus Raids since 2010, and she urges more Emiratis to join the cause.
The gift packs will be distributed on the Corniche at 4pm on February 21. Those wanting to join in can email busraids@gmail.com.
