DUBAI // A man caught with 78 capsules of cocaine in his stomach has been jailed for 10 years.
He was spotted looking fatigued by customs officers at Dubai airport and an x-ray revealed more than a kilogram of the drug in his stomach, a court heard.
Nigerian D S, 34, claimed he was just passing through the airport at 1.45am on June 28 on his way from Brazil.
Customs inspector A B, 24, said she noticed the defendant looking very ill.
“He caught my attention when I noticed he was very tired. Fatigue was very obvious and what made my suspicions grow about him is that he was coming from Brazil,” she said.
An x-ray scan detected strange objects in his stomach.
“When arrested and referred to hospital, 78 capsules of cocaine were found,” the inspector said.
The Nigerian confessed to smuggling and possessing 1.2kg of cocaine but told the court that he was not smuggling it into the UAE.
He was also fined Dh50,000 at Dubai Criminal Court on Monday.
He will be deported after serving his sentence.
