Heavy rain forces some UAE schools to close early

Torrential rain and gusty winds forced the closure of some schools across the UAE on Sunday.

Little Gems International School in Dubai sent a message to parents asking them to pick their children up early while The Cambridge High School in Abu Dhabi sent pupils home 15 minutes early, at 2pm.

After-school activities were cancelled at The Cambridge High School and Cranleigh Abu Dhabi.

The Winchester School in Dubai allowed classes to continue as usual until 2pm but after-school activities and support classes were cancelled.

Some schools, such as Gems Royal Dubai, completed the school day but allowed parents to pick up their children up early.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the regulator of private schools in Dubai, allows schools to close early, without prior KHDA approval, in cases of weather emergencies but they are required to make up for lost days in their calendar.

At present, schools have not announced whether they will be closed on Monday but weather forecasters expect the rain to have stopped by Sunday night.
