AJMAN // Meat-eaters are being asked to check the use-by date before buying after Ajman Municipality confiscated 20,496 kilograms of food in the first nine months of this year.

The Public Health and Environment Department said consumers should also check for the municipality stamp and data card, especially for imported frozen meats.

“Consumers can ask for the help of an inspector who is in the market in case they suspect any kind of meat [is out of date],” a spokesman said.

Also in the first nine months of the year, the department inspected 21,363 sacrificial animals and visited 18,419 commercial shops, issuing 4,147 warnings and 855 fines.

In addition, it issued 3,276 health certificates for exporting foodstuffs and more than 500 animal carcasses - sheep, camels and goats - were seized for being inedible.
