ABU DHABI // Emirati women make up 20 per cent of the workforce in the country’s nuclear energy industry, an official said on Monday.

Speaking at the 24th Women in Nuclear Annual Global Conference in the capital, Hasna Yousuf Al Blooshi, director for nuclear performance at Nawah, a subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said the percentage was the highest of any nuclear industry in the world.

“This strong presence of women in the nuclear sector reflects the high status [women] have achieved,” said Ms Al Blooshi.

The conference, which is being held for the first time in the Middle East, is held under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, President of the General Women’s Union and Chairwoman of Motherhood and Childhood Supreme Council.

The UAE created Enec as part of its efforts to diversify its energy sources, and is building four nuclear reactors at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant to deliver safe, clean, reliable and efficient nuclear energy to the country’s grid by 2020, Ms Al Blooshi said.
