The population of Dubai has risen above three million after the number of people living in the emirate surged by more than 200,000 in 12 months.
Dubai Statistics Centre has revealed that the population grew to 3,136,400 by the end of last month, an increase of 232,000 on the same period last year.
The emirate’s active “daytime population” is more than a million higher, at 4,291,400. This reflects the number of people in the city but not necessarily residents.
“The rise in population reflects Dubai’s growth as a dynamic economic and tourism hub,” said Arif Al Mehairi, the centre’s executive director. “As much as 37 per cent of Dubai’s active daytime population comes from outside the emirate.
“Data of both the resident and transient population of Dubai is crucial to identify infrastructural, social and economic needs.”
The centre said the number of temporary residents in the city rose by 6.6 per cent over the past 12 months, with the total resident population up by 1.1 per cent.

The latest population data shows that males constitute 49.5 per cent of the Emirati population. In the total resident population of Dubai, there are 2,195,480 males and 940,920 females in the city.
The higher proportion of males in Dubai’s population has been attributed to the fact that a majority of workers who move to the city from other parts of the world are males who live in Dubai without their families, the centre said.
The data shows that two thirds of the population are aged between 20 and 44. Of this number, almost 18 per cent are aged 30 to 34 and 17 per cent from 25 to 29.
