The UAE will provide relief aid to affected civilians in Ukraine worth $5million, in response to an urgent appeal by the United Nations.

"The UAE stresses the importance of focusing on the deteriorating humanitarian situation for civilians and ensuring their protection," state news agency Wam reported.

The humanitarian situation on the borders with Ukraine, including in Poland and Romania, is increasingly dire with thousands in make-shift camps.

Temperatures have dropped below zero and heavy snow has fallen in the past week.

Many of those feeling the Russian invasion and fighting have walked long distances to reach border crossings, and faced delays in being allowed across by border guards.
