Municipality chiefs in Liwa are stepping up efforts to protect the UAE's native shrubs and trees.
They are using a 900 square metre nursery to cultivate hundreds of thousands of wild plants such as the arta - a shrub - and ghaf tree.
The nursery will grow more than 20 species of these plants, which will then supply government entities and individuals in Liwa.
The initiative is good for the environment as the ghaf tree for example, requires far less water than palm trees and is more suitable for the UAE's harsh climate.
It is all down to the efforts of the Liwa City Services Division, who are making a sustained push to promote broader use of native plants.
Only last month, the division distributed 1,000 ghaf seedlings during the Liwa Date Festival, to encourage local people to cultivate native plants.
