DUBAI // The Emirates National Oil Company on Sunday pledged Dh3million to the UAE Water Aid campaign, which aims to provide potable water to five million people around the world.
“Reflecting the spirit of compassion and generosity that marks the holy month of Ramadan, UAE Water Aid will enable communities to have access to drinking water, the vital source of life and good health,” said Saeed Khoory, chief executive of Enoc.
Mr Khoory handed over the cheque for the amount to Yahia Abdullah Al Muaimi, head of local aid at Emirates Red Crescent, at a ceremony held at Enoc’s headquarters.
The donation will help 120,000 people to gain access to clean water.
“We are thankful that our contribution will help communities that are in urgent need of clean drinking water,” Mr Khoory said.
The UAE Water Aid programme was started on the first day of Ramadan and has so far received overwhelming support from all sections of the community. Emirati businessman Ahmad Hamad Al Shaibani donated Dh100,000, which will help 4,000 people.
With these donations the campaign is on the verge of achieving its target, having collected 99.4 per cent of Dh125m, which is the estimated amount needed to help five million people.

Basquiat in Abu Dhabi
One of Basquiat’s paintings, the vibrant Cabra (1981–82), now hangs in Louvre Abu Dhabi temporarily, on loan from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The latter museum is not open physically, but has assembled a collection and puts together a series of events called Talking Art, such as this discussion, moderated by writer Chaedria LaBouvier.
It's something of a Basquiat season in Abu Dhabi at the moment. Last week, The Radiant Child, a documentary on Basquiat was shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat, and tonight (April 18) the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is throwing the re-creation of a party tonight, of the legendary Canal Zone party thrown in 1979, which epitomised the collaborative scene of the time. It was at Canal Zone that Basquiat met prominent members of the art world and moved from unknown graffiti artist into someone in the spotlight.
“We’ve invited local resident arists, we’ll have spray cans at the ready,” says curator Maisa Al Qassemi of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi's Canal Zone Remix is at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Thursday April 18, from 8pm. Free entry to all. Basquiat's Cabra is on view at Louvre Abu Dhabi until October
