Dubai recycling campaign gathers pace

Black and green bin awareness programme moves on to Jumeirah, Al Safa, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Umm Al Seif and Al Barsha.

DUBAI // A campaign to educate residents about recycling and waste segregation is moving to other areas of the city.

The second phase of Dubai’s “My City, My Environment” drive begins on Thursday in Al Safa, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Umm Al Seif and Al Barsha.

“This door-to-door waste collection and recycling service for all residents is a unique initiative that will educate the public and allow them to help Dubai Municipality in recycling household waste in an efficient manner,” said Hussain Lootah, the director general of the municipality.

Abdul Saifaie, director of the waste-management department, said it was part of an effort to ensure that the city adheres to global standards for a greener environment.

“Cleaner communities will lead to a more pleasant lifestyle, keep the residents’ morale high and sickness rate low, creating conditions for higher economic growth,” he said.

Volunteers will visit every household and radio shows, posters and banners will also be used to educate the public.

Each house will get two 240-litre bins, one green, one black, and instructions.

Recyclables such as plastic containers, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, books, glass or plastic bottles, aluminium cans, milk and juice bottles should be placed in the green bins.Black bins are for general waste including leftover food, vegetable skins, fish waste and eggshells.

General waste will be collected daily and recyclables on alternate days, Mr Saifaie said.
