DUBAI // A worker and a driver were accused this morning of assaulting a security guard at a construction site and stealing electrical cables.

Prosecutors charged the two defendants, both 20 and from Pakistan, identified as SA and KA, with entering the construction site in Al Rawiya about 10pm in July 2010.

According to records, they attacked the guard, PM, 48, Indian, with a metal bar, hitting him about his body before trying to strangle him with a cable.

They denied the charges.

PM told prosecutors he begged them to spare his life and promised not to report the theft to police, records show.

PM said that when they left, a pick-up car arrived and three men started loading cables and other items from the site, records said.

He said that he saw the men in the pickup handing money to SA and KA, who for Dh500 to give PM so he could go to the hospital, records said.

Records said that PM memorized the last two figures of the car plate number.

Sharjah police arrested the defendants three days later on other theft charges and referred them to Dubai police, which contacted PM to identify them, records said.

Prosecutors said SA and KA confessed during investigations.

The next hearing was scheduled for April 7 to hear defence arguments.
