Air Canada is resuming direct flights from Toronto to Dubai.
The flag carrier of Canada will restart flights to the UAE on Thursday, with three services per week operating between the countries.
Flights will operate to Dubai on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Return services leaving for Toronto will depart Dubai International Airport on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Air Canada will operate the service via its Boeing Dreamliners, with outbound fares for the 13 to 14-hour journey starting from $912 (Dh2,779) Canadian dollars.
Air Canada originally suspended flights to Dubai and several other international destinations in February due to the global pandemic. The restart gives those hoping to travel between the UAE and Canada one more option to do so.
Emirates also operates direct flights between Toronto and Dubai. The airline operates four flights per week on this route, with fares starting from Dh4,025.
From Abu Dhabi, travellers flying to the capital of Ontario can go with Etihad. The national airline of the UAE flies non-stop to Toronto, with fares from Dh3,985.
In response to the global pandemic, Air Canada is currently offering flexible tickets on all new bookings, with the ability to make a date change or request a refund without paying any penalties.
Canada remains closed for tourism
The Public Health Agency of Canada continues to advise travellers to avoid all non-essential travel outside the country.
Canada is currently only welcoming its residents, citizens and those with an essential reason to visit, including reuniting with family members, into the country. It remains closed for leisure travel.
All travellers flying to Canada must complete three nights of mandatory hotel quarantine in government-authorised accommodation. There are 18 approved airport hotels for travellers to select from, located in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.
The exact cost of quarantine varies depending on the hotel you stay in, but starting prices average at about $1,300 (Dh3,962) for two adults, including meals. Travellers must reserve and pay for three full nights of quarantine, although may be allowed to leave early if they receive a negative Covid-19 test result on the second day.
Yesterday, Canada confirmed 2,118 new cases of Covid-19. While case counts continue to drop across much of the country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada won't be rushed into reopening its borders for non-essential travel.
"We’re on the right path, but we’ll make our decisions based on the interests of Canadians and not based on what other countries want,” Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa on Monday.

China and the UAE agree comprehensive strategic partnership
China and the UAE forged even closer links between the two countries during the landmark state visit after finalising a ten-point agreement on a range of issues, from international affairs to the economy and trade and renewable energy.
1. Politics: The two countries agreed to support each other on issues of security and to work together on regional and international challenges. The nations also confirmed that the number of high-level state visits between China and the UAE will increase.
2. Economy: The UAE offers its full support to China's Belt and Road Initiative, which will combine a land 'economic belt" and a "maritime silk road" that will link China with the Arabian Gulf as well as Southeast, South and Central China, North Africa and, eventually, Europe.
3. Business and innovation: The two nations are committed to exploring new partnerships in sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, energy, the aviation and transport industries and have vowed to build economic co-operation through the UAE-China Business Committee.
4. Education, science and technology: The Partnership Programme between Arab countries in Science and Technology will encourage young Emirati scientists to conduct research in China, while the nations will work together on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, renewable energy and space projects.
5. Renewable energy and water: The two countries will partner to develop renewable energy schemes and work to reduce climate change. The nations have also reiterated their support for the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency.
6. Oil and gas: The UAE and China will work in partnership in the crude oil trade and the exploration and development of oil and natural gas resources.
7. Military and law enforcement and security fields: Joint training will take place between the Chinese and UAE armed forces, while the two nations will step up efforts to combat terrorism and organised crime.
8. Culture and humanitarian issues: Joint cultural projects will be developed and partnerships will be cultivated on the preservation of heritage, contemporary art and tourism.
9. Movement between countries: China and the UAE made clear their intent to encourage travel between the countries through a wide-ranging visa waiver agreement.
10. Implementing the strategic partnership: The Intergovernmental Co-operation Committee, established last year, will be used to ensure the objectives of the partnership are implemented.

Five years ago, Uber launched in the Middle East. It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.
Today we are taking the next step in this journey—well, it’s more like a leap, and a big one: in a few minutes, we’ll announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Careem. Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.
This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. And since both companies will continue to largely operate separately after the acquisition, very little will change in either teams’ day-to-day operations post-close. Today’s news is a testament to the incredible business our team has worked so hard to build.
