Bale's goal ensured a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad to move Madrid top of the Primera Liga table, at least for a few hours.
City rivals Atletico Madrid then assumed top spot after their 1-0 win, courtesy of substitute Antoine Griezmann's finish, before Barcelona then took back their place as leaders with a 2-0 win over 10-man Real Betis.
Barca lead the league level on points with Atletico, but with a superior head-to-head record, while Real Madrid trail by a point with two matches to play.
