It is easy to dismiss pre-season friendlies. Especially with a number of the bigger sides being without players due to the Africa Cup of Nations and Copa America only finishing midway through July.

But it is a chance for managers, and fans, to get a closer look at the next generation of talent coming through at their clubs.

Manchester United, particularly, have given youth its chance in pre-season and the burgeoning reputations of players such as Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Axel Tuanzebe have only been enhanced.

Chelsea and Arsenal, with Tammy Abraham and Eddie Nketiah respectively, have had young strikers build their confidence with winning goals against big European sides in the shape of Barcelona and Bayern Munich
