Man City extend lead as Huddersfield stun Man United, Chelsea ride luck: Premier League round-up

A round-up of all the reports and results from this weekend's Premier League action.

• Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to inspire Chelsea's fightback against Watford and ease the pressure on manager Antonio Conte. Successive defeats in the Premier League, the most recent against goalless and pointless Crystal Palace, saw Conte's position come under scrutiny. It looked as though the pressure was set to intensify further when Watford scored either side of half-time through Abdoulaye Doucoure then Roberto Pereyra to cancel out Pedro's long-ranger stunner. However, two headed goals, first from substitute Batshuayi then defender Azpilicueta gave Chelsea the advantage, before Batshuayi handed the champions some breathing space with a scrappy finish at the death. While Chelsea will savour this much-needed victory, Watford will feel they had enough chances to gain something from the match, and will certainly feel aggrieved about Chelsea's opener, which started from a corner that should have been awarded a goal kick when the ball quite clearly came off Eden Hazard last. The result sees the two sides swap places in the table, with Chelsea moving up to fourth and Watford dropping to fifth.

Man United: Rashford (78')

• Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the season with a shock 2-1 loss at promoted Huddersfield Town, leaving them trailing Premier League leaders Manchester City by five points. Huddersfield took the lead in the 28th minute when Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy robbed Juan Mata in midfield, broke forward, slipped the ball to Tom Ince and then fired home after Ince's shot was blocked by David De Gea. United lost defender Phil Jones to injury and his replacement Victor Lindelof was to blame for Huddersfield's second when he completely misjudged a long clearance from keeper Jonas Lossl, allowing Belgian Laurent Depoitre to round De Gea and slot home. Jose Mourinho's side pulled one back with 12 minutes remaining, Marcus Rashford meeting a Romelu Lukaku cross with a firm header at the back post but despite late pressure the Yorkshire side held on for a famous victory.

Man City: Aguero (30' pen), Otamendi (73'), Sane (75')

• Sergio Aguero equalled Manchester City's all-time goal-scoring record as the Premier League leaders wore down Burnley to secure a 3-0 victory. Aguero, making his first appearance since breaking his rib in a taxi crash on September 28, struck his 177th goal for City with a penalty, equalling the mark set by Eric Brook between 1927 and 1939. City had to work hard for openings, but made the game safe with two quick goals inside the final 20 minutes from Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane. Pep Guardiola's side are five points clear at the top of the table, while their run of 11 successive wins in all competitions equals a club record.

Newcastle: Merino (86')

• A late header by substitute Mikel Merino gave Newcastle a 1-0 home win over bottom team Crystal Palace in a scrappy clash at St James's Park. Merino made a run into the box and powered home an inviting Matt Ritchie corner to settle a game littered with fouls and there were few chances at either end. Palace were left the only Premier League side yet to keep a clean sheet this season and lost by the same score when the two sides last met in the top flight in 2016, when their forward Andros Townsend scored for his former club. This time round, Townsend was jeered Newcastle fans in an ill-tempered match and was lucky to escape with only a yellow card for a reckless tackle on Newcastle's DeAndre Yeldin.

Bournemouth: Surman (16'), Stanislas (18' pen)

• Stoke have been sucked into the Premier League relegation zone after two goals within 133 seconds earned Bournemouth a first top-flight victory on their travels this season. Eddie Howe's side had lost each of their four away fixtures, but Andrew Surman's opener was swiftly followed by a Junior Stanislas penalty. Stoke pulled one back in the second period through Mame Diouf but a 2-1 loss saw them drop into the bottom three following a run of one win from eight in all competitions. On-loan Spanish forward Jese Rodriguez had a fair claim for a penalty that would have levelled the match, but the exaggerated fall did little for his case.

Swansea: Mawson (56')
Leicester: Fernandez (25' og), Okazaki (49')

• A Federico Fernandez own goal and a second-half strike by Shinji Okazaki gave Leicester City caretaker manager Michael Appleton a much-needed 2-1 win away to Swansea City in his first game in charge, lifting Leicester out of the bottom three in the process. Taking the reins after the sacking of Craig Shakespeare earlier in the week, Appleton saw Fernandez head the ball into his own net to give Leicester the lead after 25 minutes. Okazaki doubled the advantage just after the break, firing home to finish a quick counter-attack. Defender Alfie Mawson pulled one back for Swansea, hooking the ball home following a corner for his first goal of the season and prompting Swansea to pour forward looking for an equaliser. In doing so they left huge gaps at the back, and Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both could have scored. Leicester hung on for the win that sent them out of the relegation zone and up to 13th place in the table on nine points after nine games.

Southampton 1 West Bromwich Albion 0
Southampton: Boufal (85')

• Sofiane Boufal ran almost the length of the pitch to score a stunning 85th-minute goal at the St Mary's Stadium as Southampton beat West Bromwich Albion. The Moroccan midfielder picked up the ball just outside his own area and picked his way through West Brom's midfield at pace before transferring the ball from one foot to the other and beating the diving Ben Foster in the opposition's goal. The win was only Southampton's second in 11 home games and was fitting reward after they threatened from the start. The visitors, for whom Jonny Evans departed injured after falling heavily on his shoulder, hardly touched the ball before the interval although former Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez had two chances to snatch a win before Boufal came off the bench to make the difference.
