Dutch side impress in 2-0 victory to keep Europa League group alive

ARSENAL RATINGS: Aaron Ramsdale – 6 Was at fault for PSV’s second when he failed to punch clear the corner, which enabled De Jong to nod in. Despite his mistake, the Arsenal stopper made numerous vital saves to keep his side in the game. AP

Kieran Tierney – 4 Defensively a night to forget for the Scotsman, who also failed to offer anything in attack down the left flank. Youngster Simons caused problems for Tierney throughout, and De Jong was his man at the corner. AP

William Saliba – 4 PSV’s young prospects Simons and Gakpo proved too much for the Frenchman, who looked totally out of sorts compared to usual. EPA

Rob Holding – 4 A bad day at the office for the centre back, who was unable to deal with the danger imposed by the home side’s bright attack. Was out of position for the first goal. PA

Takehiro Tomiyasu – 5 Had a tough night trying to contain PSV Captain Gakpo, who was a constant threat down the left flank. Lost Veerman for the first goal. Getty

Granit Xhaka – 5 Has been impressive this season, but this wasn’t a performance to remember. The midfielder was also booked in the second half, which means he’s suspended for his sides next Europa League fixture. Looked tired. EPA

Albert Sambi Lokonga – 4 Couldn’t cope with PSV's press when trying to bring the ball out of the Gunners half, which didn’t help his side’s attacking woes. Was hooked before the hour mark. Getty

Martin Odegaard – 6 The Norwegian wasn’t his usual creative self from the midfield, which is a credit to the opposition’s high pressing. He had limited time and space on the ball. Was taken off early in the second half. PA

Gabriel Martinelli – 6 Had a few chances in the first half, the most threatening an effort struck over the bar after he was free at the back post. Overall, a disappointing performance. AP

Eddie Nketiah – 5 Looked sharp and had a great opportunity to halve the deficit after the break, but couldn’t put the chance away. Suffered from a lack of service from his teammates but ultimately found it hard to get himself into the tie. EPA

Fabio Vieira – 6 Looked like one of Arsenal’s brighter sparks going forward in the first half, but drifted out of the game in the second. AP

SUBS: Thomas Partey (Lokonga, 56) – 6 Added some physicality into the midfield but like the rest of his side, couldn’t cope with the opposition’s intensity. EPA

Bukayo Saka (Odegaard, 56) – 7 Offered a threat down the right as Arsenal looked to make a comeback, but was unable to create any chances of real danger. PA

Gabriel Jesus (Holding, 63) – 5 Was unable to put a stamp on the game and couldn’t change the outcome. PA

Gabriel (Tierney, 73) N/A – Was introduced when his side were on top searching for a way back, and didn’t see much of the ball. Reuters

Ben White (Tomiyasu, 73) – N/A Looked to offer something going forward on the right flank with Saka, but nothing didn't create anything of note. PA

PSV Eindhoven became the first team to stop Arsenal scoring this season as they claimed a 2-0 victory to keep alive the fight for first place in their Europa League group.

Joey Veerman and substitute Luuk de Jong scored in the second half for PSV to hand Premier League leader Arsenal only their second loss of the season in all competitions and first in the Europa League.

De Jong set up Veerman to shoot past Aaron Ramsdale from inside the area in the 56th minute before heading in the second seven minutes later.

Arsenal still lead Group A with 12 points, with Eindhoven second on 10 with one round remaining. Both teams have qualified for the next stage, but the group winners advance directly to the last 16, while teams qualifying second go through an extra playoff round.
