La Liga said farewell to greats Xavi and Iker Casillas in the close season, as well as players such as Mario Mandzukic (to Juventus) and Carlos Bacca (to AC Milan). Some of the players to watch for this season are:
Jackson Martinez, Atletico Madrid
“Radamel Falcao had an effective partnership for Colombia with Jackson Martinez because they’re so different, but I actually prefer Jackson,” former Arsenal striker Luis Boa Morte said. “With Falcao, the team needs to be playing well. With Jackson, he can lift a team when they are down and change a game.” Atletico will hope the Colombian has a similar impact to the last big forward they signed from Porto, Falcao.
Rafael van der Vaart, Real Betis
Van der Vaart, 32, is the star signing of Betis, back in the top flight to resume their rivalry with Sevilla. They have sold an incredible 44,000 season tickets for this campaign. How Van der Vaart, once of Ajax, Hamburg, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur and with 109 Netherlands caps, fares will be interesting as he is a luxury player. At least he has family nearby; his Spanish grandmother lives 130 kilometres away.
Alvaro Negredo, Valencia
Negredo and Roberto Soldado have returned to Spain after underwhelming spells in the Premier League with Manchester City and Tottenham, respectively. Negredo was a beast at Sevilla – a direct rival of his new club, Valencia. Soldado, formerly of Valencia signed for Villarreal in a €16 million (Dh64.9m) deal. Both need to discover their form of old.
Gael Kakuta, Sevilla
Kakuta, 24, signed by Sevilla from Chelsea for €6.5m, is at his eighth club. The French winger played 34 games for Rayo Vallecano last season and impressed. His potential first attracted Chelsea at 16, but too many loan moves to too many countries (five) have resulted in a stop-start career so far. Playing in an accomplished Sevilla side could be exactly what his career needs.
Jonathas, Real Sociedad
Jonathas was Elche’s star last season, their first player to score more than 10 goals in the top flight since 1977. The Brazilian scored 14 goals in 34 games. The powerful forward should be more effective than Sociedad’s last big target man, the Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason, who cost €7.5 million in 2014 and managed only two goals in the league last term. He is on loan at Olympiakos.
