Late transfers
Al Jazira made two signings before Thursday night's transfer window slammed shut, bringing in the Brazilian centre-back Joao Carlos on a one-year deal from Belgian club Lokeren and the Portuguese striker Ailton Almeida from the Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
They take the places of Peru forward Jefferson Farfan and Brazilian midfielder Thiago Neves in Henk ten Cate’s squad and are available for Friday’s Arabian Gulf League match at Kalba.
“The formalities were completed on the last day of the transfer deadline,” a Jazira official said yesterday. “Now it’s for the coach to decide when to play them.”
The official would not elaborate on the future of either Farfan or Neves but, according to Farfan’s agent, the player returned to his homeland on Wednesday. It is not clear whether Jazira have released Farfan from his contract.
Farfan has played all three Arabian Gulf League games for Jazira so far, scoring twice, and also made three appearances in the Arabian Gulf Cup, scoring once.
Friday's opponents, Kalba, also have a new player in their ranks after signing the Brazilian forward Ciel from Al Ahli. He also spent a productive three-year spell at another Dubai club, Al Shabab, from 2011 to 2014.

Tagliabue ‘relaxed now’
After failing to score in two AGL games, Sebastian Tagliabue was bang on target with a double in Al Wahda’s 3-0 triumph over Al Dhafra last week.
Javier Aguirre, the Wahda manager, revealed how the Argentine striker, winner of both the Golden Boot and the Foreign Player of the Year last term, got his confidence back.
“I made him to sit on the bench for an hour to make him watch the action of two cup games,” Aguirre said. “The whole exercise was to make him relax and that trick seems to have worked out pretty well.”
Tagliabue has topped Wahda’s scoring chartsor the last three seasons. He scored 28 goals in his first season, in 2013/2014, before following up with 15 and 25 strikes in the two corresponding seasons.
No rest for Al Ain
After a bruising second leg against El Jaish of Qatar to secure a passage to the final of the Asian Champions League, Al Ain return to domestic action for another demanding game.
Zlatko Dalic, the Al Ain manager, will be hoping his men can sustain their continental form when they travel domestically to Dubai to play Al Nasr.
Al Ain have won their two opening games, while Nasr have suffered successive defeats.

Sharjah see off Al Dhafra at home
Sharjah beat Al Dhafra in the league 2-1 last night thanks to a Song Jin-hyung winner.
Omar Khrbin strike on the stroke of half time had cancelled out Rivas’s early effort before Song scored in the 73rd minute.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Who is Enric Sala?
Enric Sala is an expert on marine conservation and is currently the National Geographic Society's Explorer-in-Residence. His love of the sea started with his childhood in Spain, inspired by the example of the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau. He has been a university professor of Oceanography in the US, as well as working at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Biodiversity and the Bio-Economy. He has dedicated his life to protecting life in the oceans. Enric describes himself as a flexitarian who only eats meat occasionally.
What is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, all life on earth – including in its forests and oceans – forms a “rich tapestry of interconnecting and interdependent forces”. Biodiversity on earth today is the product of four billion years of evolution and consists of many millions of distinct biological species. The term ‘biodiversity’ is relatively new, popularised since the 1980s and coinciding with an understanding of the growing threats to the natural world including habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of biodiversity itself is dangerous because it contributes to clean, consistent water flows, food security, protection from floods and storms and a stable climate. The natural world can be an ally in combating global climate change but to do so it must be protected. Nations are working to achieve this, including setting targets to be reached by 2020 for the protection of the natural state of 17 per cent of the land and 10 per cent of the oceans. However, these are well short of what is needed, according to experts, with half the land needed to be in a natural state to help avert disaster.
