Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has said he is leaving New York City FC and will be making an announcement on the next stage of his career “very soon”.

Lampard, 38, signed for New York in July 2014 following 13 years at Chelsea, during which time he became the Premier League club’s record scorer with 211 goals.

After signing for the MLS side, Lampard joined sister club Manchester City on loan for the 2014/15 season, a move that angered New York fans.

Lampard’s first season in New York was far from stellar, with injuries and his loan spell restricting his performances and impact. Indeed, the midfielder was described as the “worst signing in MLS history”.

However, Lampard rediscovered his form this season, scoring 12 goals in 14 games, helping New York reach the playoffs before losing to Toronto FC in the semi-finals.

“As my time at NYCFC comes to an end I would like to thank so many people for the kindness and support that they have shown me over the last two years,” Lampard wrote on his Instagram account.

“My teammates have been a pleasure to play alongside. The amazing fans have given me incredible support and backing. All the people that work behind the scenes at NYCFC have made it so easy for me to work and settle here.

“I have very much enjoyed my time, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play for such a great club and in such an incredible city. I leave with many great memories as I embark on the next stage of my career and I’ll be making an announcement very soon.”

Former Italy midfielder and New York City teammate Andrea Pirlo led the tributes to Lampard following the announcement.

“I have been honoured and it has been a pleasure to play with you this year and a half,” Pirlo, 37, wrote on his Instagram account.

“I wish you and your family all the best and I hope to meet you again on a soccer field.”

Lampard then replied to Pirlo’s post, thanking him for his kind words.

“A class post from a class man. The pleasure was all mine,” Lampard wrote. “To play with you and have you as a friend. I’ll see you soon.”

It is unclear whether Lampard will continue his playing career or take his first steps into coaching, although it has been reported that Chelsea will offer him a return to the club if he decides to retire.

The Daily Mail has claimed that Chelsea are keen for Lampard to return to the club and play a key role in their future, given his importance to their rise as a domestic and continental force.
