With reference to The wildlife expert who tackled climate change (October 1): Loved her all my life. What a beautiful soul, her life and work will live forever. Rest in peace, Ms Goodall.
Roshnee Nalwala, Dubai
Dr Goodall reminded the world that animals feel, think and love and that humanity must listen to them with humility. Her legacy will live on in every forest protected, every child awakened to the beauty of the natural world and ever act of compassion to animals. From the Zagros mountains, my people honour your voice and courage and the light you leave behind. Rest in peace, guardian of nature. With deepest respect to you and all who carry your mission forward.
Mehrdad Taheri, Istanbul, Turkey
She was my idol since childhood, and her important work will live forever.

Trump's Gaza peace plan
With regard to the report by Hamza Hendawi and Khaled Yacoub Oweis Hamas cornered but may drag heels on Trump ceasefire plan (September 30): The key thing to insist on for the sake of the future of Palestine is changing is withdrawal of all Israeli troops, permanent cessation of hostilities with international guarantees, and an immediate implementation of the two state solution. If they do not do that, then it's not really a peace agreement.
Mona Tayera Deeley, London
Blair's role in Palestine
With reference to Thomas Harding and Damien McElroy's report UK ministers back Trump plan as Blair is handed role (September 30): Have we run out of Palestinians to consult on this plan that involves their very future?
Karly J, Doha, Qatar
Wasn't the Balfour Declaration fiasco enough for the British? Why this need to further the damage? Leave the future of Gaza to Palestinians and the Arab world.
Dinaz M, Abu Dhabi
Why are white people deciding what Palestinians do with their land and their lives? Also why is a British man involved in Palestine's future. Isn't this what started the mess in the first place?
Rima Karam Patel, Dubai
Impossible to believe. The people responsible should be peace makers, not war mongers.
Helen M Cole, New Jersey, US
The Palestinian Authority should be involved for decisions about the future governance and geographical aspects of the Palestinian people. It is the only body that should decide if they want assistance from others - whether the neighbouring countries or proven friends in the world such as Spain, Ireland, or the current Palestinian ambassadors from other countries or UNHCR representatives. My view might possibly be that of a naive outsider but the Palestinians should be involved in their own future.
Claudia Malik, Cambridge, UK
Palestine is for the Palestinian people. They should get to decide.
Socelle Fuentes, Dubai

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Retirement funds heavily invested in equities at a risky time
Pension funds in growing economies in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East have a sharply higher percentage of assets parked in stocks, just at a time when trade tensions threaten to derail markets.
Retirement money managers in 14 geographies now allocate 40 per cent of their assets to equities, an 8 percentage-point climb over the past five years, according to a Mercer survey released last week that canvassed government, corporate and mandatory pension funds with almost $5 trillion in assets under management. That compares with about 25 per cent for pension funds in Europe.
The escalating trade spat between the US and China has heightened fears that stocks are ripe for a downturn. With tensions mounting and outcomes driven more by politics than economics, the S&P 500 Index will be on course for a “full-scale bear market” without Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts, Citigroup’s global macro strategy team said earlier this week.
The increased allocation to equities by growth-market pension funds has come at the expense of fixed-income investments, which declined 11 percentage points over the five years, according to the survey.
Hong Kong funds have the highest exposure to equities at 66 per cent, although that’s been relatively stable over the period. Japan’s equity allocation jumped 13 percentage points while South Korea’s increased 8 percentage points.
The money managers are also directing a higher portion of their funds to assets outside of their home countries. On average, foreign stocks now account for 49 per cent of respondents’ equity investments, 4 percentage points higher than five years ago, while foreign fixed-income exposure climbed 7 percentage points to 23 per cent. Funds in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan are among those seeking greater diversification in stocks and fixed income.
