The opening of Primark in Dubai last week drew large numbers of shoppers, all queuing for a taste of the Irish high-street favourite known for its throw-it-all-in-the-basket appeal owing to low prices.

For many, Primark has long been a go-to as the place to stock up on basics, seasonal pieces and last-minute buys. Its arrival in the UAE also highlights something else: a demand for budget shopping in the Emirates.

For those who are looking for something more pocket-friendly, there is a mix of value retailers, off-price shops and thrift concepts that offer plenty of affordable options, if you know where to look.

Here are some to consider.

Max Fashion

The budget-friendly brand under the Landmark Group sells its own in-house collections. It offers affordable clothing, footwear and some home items, with a focus on everyday basics and simple, wearable pieces. Pricing is consistent across stores, making it an easy option for picking up clothing staples. Essential items such as men's cotton T-shirts start at Dh20, women's shorts go for Dh25 and children's cotton tops are from Dh15.

R&B Fashion

The brand by Apparel Group offers affordable clothing, footwear and home accessories. Its collections focus on basics and family-friendly styles, with regular new arrivals. It leans more practical than trend-driven, making it a useful option for essentials. Women's dresses start at Dh55, men's T-shirts at Dh27 and clothing sets for newborns at Dh55.

Splash

The regional fashion brand founded in Sharjah combines its own collections with select international labels. Its wares tend to follow seasonal trends while remaining relatively affordable. Prices for women's tank tops start at Dh22, while men's crew neck T-shirts are from Dh22.

Brands For Less

The off-price retailer is built around a “treasure hunt” model, where stock changes frequently and shoppers sift through a mix of past-season items. There's clothing, footwear, homeware and toys from a range of international brands, typically sold at up to 80 per cent below original retail prices. Best for shoppers willing to spend time browsing, as availability can vary, it follows a similar model to TJ Maxx (or TK Maxx as it is known in the UK).

Brands Bazaar

The budget-friendly shop is known for stocking up regularly. It offers well-known labels across menswear, womenswear and children’s clothing, alongside footwear and accessories, with pricing generally lower than traditional retail. Like other off-price stores, it requires a bit of patience, but frequent restocks mean there is often something new to find.

Off/Price

The brand launched by the Apparel Group bridges the gap between high-end aspiration and budget-conscious reality. Rather than just a clearance outlet, it is designed as a curated hub for “brand-conscious” shoppers to access an ever-evolving mix of apparel, accessories, make-up, footwear and homeware from labels such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Adidas.

Affordables

Affordables has fashion, footwear and accessories for men, women and children at a friendly price point. It offers a vast inventory of casual wear and essentials at heavy discounts, often ranging from 75 to 90 per cent off. Best for families looking for wardrobe staples and trendy pieces, it lists men's cargo shorts for Dh40, while a pair of linen blend wide-leg pants for women are for Dh70.

Wear Mart

The long-running budget retailer in Abu Dhabi has branches in Mussaffah, Najda and Al Falah. It stocks a range of low-cost clothing, accessories and household basics that appeal to families buying in bulk. It has among the lowest price points in the UAE, although quality and styles can be inconsistent. Shoes can start as low as Dh4, men's assorted T-shirts at Dh10 and women's skirts for Dh7.50.

Thrift for Good

This charity shop operates for a good cause. It sells donated clothing, books and accessories, with all profits supporting children’s charities of Gulf for Good under Islamic Affairs Fundraising Approval. Stock is second-hand and constantly changing, with generally low price points. Selection depends on donations, so can vary from day to day.

Dubai Outlet Mall

The outlet shopping centre on the outskirts of Dubai brings together hundreds of brands selling past-season stock. Outlet stores include Marks & Spencer, Lululemon, Squatwolf and The North Face. Discounts typically range from 30 per cent to 90 per cent off original prices, depending on the retailer and time of year. This is more suited to branded bargains than everyday budget basics.

The outlet mall in Jebel Ali is designed to resemble an Italian village, with a focus on discounted premium and luxury brands. Stores include Aigner, Balmain, Dolce & Gabbana and Lacoste. It offers a more polished shopping environment, with reduced prices on labels that remain positioned above typical high-street budgets. It is best approached as discounted luxury rather than low-cost shopping.
