RM Sotheby's Yas Marina Circuit Grand Prix auction's latest lots roar in

The list of cars due to be sold at Yas Marina Circuit's Grand Prix auction by RM Sotheby's later this year is filling up with the rapidity of a paddling pool at the mercy of a high-pressure hose. The initial announcement in June of two Ferraris was quickly followed up with news of a Lamborghini, then another Lamborghini, then five Porsches, and a Rolls-Royce.

Look through the photo gallery above to see more of these supercars.

And the list will be considerably longer by the time the auctioneers arrive to do their duty in November.

The sale will feature a selection of significant Grand Prix racing machines alongside road-going vehicles with a historical connection to the world of motorsport. The mix will also include a broader collection of blue-chip classic cars.

At the moment, the headliner in the sale remains Michael Schumacher's 2002 Formula One championship-winning Ferrari – so nothing excessively practical or road-friendly, but there are plenty of less pricey options available for the shallower-pocketed attendees (or those who may actually fancy using their new purchases on the roads in an urban environment).

For a start, there’s the Ferrari’s Italian stablemate, a 1990 F40. And no self-respecting car auction would be complete without a Lamborghini or two, of course, and, so far, the Yas sale has a 1979 Countach LP400 and a 2001 Diablo GT on offer.

Let’s not forget the Porsche quintet, which is made up of a 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7, a 1993 911 Carrera RSR 3.8, a 2010 911 Sport Classic, a 2011 911 Speedster, and the almost-new 2017 918 Spyder.

Then there’s the 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe.

Now, you want to know how much these pretty little posers are likely to cost, don't you? Well, take a deep breath, and let's run through the Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Schumacher's F1 marvel could be yours for $5.5 million (Dh20.2m) to $7.5m, but the F40 is a most reasonable (by comparison) $1.5m to $1.7m.

The estimate for the Countach is $400,000 to $500,000 and the Diablo is $700,000 to $750,000.

The sale will be the region's first major international collector car auction, and will take place on November 30 at Yas Marina Circuit, the day before the season's last Formula One race. More will be announced in the coming months.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.

The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.

Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.

However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.

Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
