The word “fika” translates from the Swedish as a “coffee and cake break”, but its philosophy runs far deeper. Indulging in fika means taking time out to enjoy a bite or beverage with people who matter. It’s this state of mind that Izu Ani – the patron chef of five Dubai restaurants –  wants to promote with his latest venture, which opened at Jumeirah Beach Hotel this month.

The food focus at Fika is on wholesome yet indulgent cuisine, in that fresh produce and nourishing ingredients are cooked fine-dining-style. Think a salad with blueberries and feta cheese; and lobster roasted with charcoal.

“Time is a gift and Fika is a sanctuary where time stands still, be it for a quick smoothie, light snack or leisurely meal savoured with friends,” says Ani. “Think of it as clean indulgence.”
