Meghan Markle stepped off an airplane in the Pacific island nation of Tonga, a 90-minute flight from Fiji, in a siren-red dress, Dior clutch and Manolo Blahnik pumps. Snapped as she always is from head to toe, it soon emerged that the Duchess of Sussex had forgotten to take the tag off her dress, which is from Self-Portrait.
The errant label, which was captured sticking out from under the hem, has since been posted and re-posted front and back, with many members of the so-called fashion police club calling Markle out for her "blunder".
To us, though, it just makes the duchess all the more endearing. As she performs her royal duties, smile ever in place, Markle should not be criticised for an oversight that's commonplace and in no way takes away from her ever-stylish wardrobe and demeanour.
The argument is that the Duchess of Sussex, with her entourage of stylists and advisers, should be above such "errors". But, if anything, Markle's omission makes her even more relatable (we've all left price tags on our new shoes at least more than once).
That said, it's hard to relate to touring the world in high heels, with hair, make-up, wardrobe and smile more or less in place, while being about four months pregnant.
Markle, like Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has proved her willingness to support emerging labels alongside big-name brands. The royal sisters-in-law have spawned many a "dress like a duchess" headline, catapulting labels such as Self-Portrait, by self-made designer Han Chong, to instant global fame. A pithy label should not steal that limelight.
But, we still do have one question - did she plan on returning the dress after its Pacific Island appearance? If so, that again, just makes us love her even more.
