Abu Dhabi asset manager Invest AD sold its 38 per cent stake in Airport International Group, the concessionaire that developed and operates Jordan’s Queen Alia International Airport, for $230 million to Groupe ADP, a Paris-based airport operator.
“Over the last decade Invest AD has played a key role in this landmark public private partnership project, which has promoted economic growth and the tourism industry in Jordan,” said Faras Al Rahami, chief executive officer of Invest AD.
“Our legacy is a new state-of-the-art passenger terminal that has enhanced capacity, comfort and services significantly, and allowed a doubling of passenger numbers since 2007.”

As well as purchasing Invest AD’s stake, Groupe ADP also purchased stakes of AIG owned by Noor Financial Investment Company, Joannou & Parakevaides and some of those owned by Edgo. The details of the stake sales of the other companies apart from Invest AD weren’t stated.
The purchases by Groupe ADP takes the company’s ownership of AIG to 51 per cent from 9.5 per cent. The other shareholders after the transaction are Edgo, Meridiam and IDB Infrastructure Fund II.
AIG’s annual passenger numbers have more than doubled to 7.9m passengers in 2017 from 3.8m passengers in 2007 when AIG was awarded a 25-year build-operate-transfer concession for the airport in a competitive tender process.
AIG oversaw an extensive capital investment program over the last 10 years, including the construction of a new terminal, designed by the celebrated architect Norman Foster, which opened in 2013. A further expansion was made in 2016 which raised the passenger capacity to 12 million passengers. In 2007, it was 3.5m. The airport now has a total of 25 gates and can accommodate Airbus A380 passenger airplanes, the world’s biggest.
The concessionaire also built new business lounges, duty free areas, and fashion, retail, food and beverage spaces. It also recently renovated the airport’s second runway.

Family reunited
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was born and raised in Tehran and studied English literature before working as a translator in the relief effort for the Japanese International Co-operation Agency in 2003.
She moved to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies before moving to the World Health Organisation as a communications officer.
She came to the UK in 2007 after securing a scholarship at London Metropolitan University to study a master's in communication management and met her future husband through mutual friends a month later.
The couple were married in August 2009 in Winchester and their daughter was born in June 2014.
She was held in her native country a year later.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
