If you wondered where Hollywood’s A-list celebrities had gone during President Donald Trump’s inauguration, you didn’t have to wonder any longer on Saturday, when scores of them showed up at huge women’s marches in Washington and other cities to send the new president a pointed message that he was in for a fight - and that, as so many signs said, women’s rights are human rights.

Madonna, Julia Roberts, Scarlett Johansson, Cher, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Emma Watson, Amy Schumer, Jake Gyllenhaal and feminist leader Gloria Steinem were just some of those at the march in Washington, where officials said the crowd could number more than half a million.

In New York, Helen Mirren, Cynthia Nixon and Whoopi Goldberg joined a crowd of protesters marching to Trump’s home at Trump Tower. In Park City, Utah, where the Sundance Film Festival was underway, TV host Chelsea Handler was joined by Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and more. In Los Angeles, Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Demi Lovato and Jane Fonda were among tens of thousands protesting.

Bieber not a Weeknd fan

Justin Bieber has revealed he is not a fan of The Weeknd, aka Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, his ex Selina Gomez’s latest love interest. Bieber was asked by a photographer in West Hollywood at the weekend if he listened to the singer’s work: “Hell no, I can’t listen to a Weeknd song,” Bieber replied, as seen in a video posted on TMZ Saturday. “That s--t’s whack.”

The Weeknd has not responded. The video was posted days after he and Gomez went public with their romance when they were photographed kissing outside a restaurant in Los Angeles. She and Bieber dated on and off for three years before calling it quits in 2014. He has not commented on her relationship with Tesfaye, which is believed to be in its early stages.

James Marsden tipped for Green Lantern role

James Marsden is reportedly being eyed by DC Comics to star in Green Lantern Corps. An insider said that Marsden is included in the shortlist of actors being considered to play Hal Jordan, one out of two Green Lanterns, in the upcoming movie, reports aceshowbiz.com "I've heard one more name, too," the insider said about Marsden's potential casting. "Ever since 'Westworld', Marsden has been pretty hot around here. They've discussed him for Hal as well," the insider added. Previously, there were reports about possible shortlist of actors who may play Hal Jordan. The list included names such as Tom Cruise, Jake Gyllenhaal, Armie Hammer, Bradley Cooper, Joel McHale and Ryan Reynolds - who had played the character in the 2011 film Green Lantern. While the company is busy trying to find the perfect actor to play the part, the other Green Lantern, John Stewart, will be played by Sterling K. Brown.

Unlike the previous adaptation Green Lantern which focused more on Hal Jordan, the upcoming movie is expected to focus on the Corps, the intergalactic police force formed to protect different sectors of the universe. Green Lantern Corps is scheduled for a July 24, 2020 release in the US.

J-Lo ‘head over heels’ for Drake

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez is said to be “head over heels” in love with rapper Drake, who is 17 years younger to her. Lopez, 47, and Drake, 30, started dating late last year. “She’s head over heels for Drake. It’s a new relationship, but she really likes him. She’s really into him,” a source told etonline.com.

The couple first sparked romance rumours in December 2016 after Drake visited Lopez at her Las Vegas show. They were spotted enjoying a dinner in Hollywood just before Christmas, and celebrated New Year together in Las Vegas. Lopez had earlier revealed they have been in the studio recording new music together. Asked about her new project with Drake, she had said: “He just asked me to do a song with him and that’s what we’ve been doing. We’ll see if it’s on his next album.”

Tributes from the UAE's personal finance community

• Sebastien Aguilar, who heads SimplyFI.org, a non-profit community where people learn to invest Bogleheads’ style

“It is thanks to Jack Bogle’s work that this community exists and thanks to his work that many investors now get the full benefits of long term, buy and hold stock market investing.

Compared to the industry, investing using the common sense approach of a Boglehead saves a lot in costs and guarantees higher returns than the average actively managed fund over the long term.

From a personal perspective, learning how to invest using Bogle’s approach was a turning point in my life. I quickly realised there was no point chasing returns and paying expensive advisers or platforms. Once money is taken care off, you can work on what truly matters, such as family, relationships or other projects. I owe Jack Bogle for that.”

• Sam Instone, director of financial advisory firm AES International

"Thought to have saved investors over a trillion dollars, Jack Bogle’s ideas truly changed the way the world invests. Shaped by his own personal experiences, his philosophy and basic rules for investors challenged the status quo of a self-interested global industry and eventually prevailed.  Loathed by many big companies and commission-driven salespeople, he has transformed the way well-informed investors and professional advisers make decisions."

• Demos Kyprianou, a board member of SimplyFI.org

"Jack Bogle for me was a rebel, a revolutionary who changed the industry and gave the little guy like me, a chance. He was also a mentor who inspired me to take the leap and take control of my own finances."

• Steve Cronin, founder of DeadSimpleSaving.com

"Obsessed with reducing fees, Jack Bogle structured Vanguard to be owned by its clients – that way the priority would be fee minimisation for clients rather than profit maximisation for the company.

His real gift to us has been the ability to invest in the stock market (buy and hold for the long term) rather than be forced to speculate (try to make profits in the shorter term) or even worse have others speculate on our behalf.

Bogle has given countless investors the ability to get on with their life while growing their wealth in the background as fast as possible. The Financial Independence movement would barely exist without this."

• Zach Holz, who blogs about financial independence at The Happiest Teacher

"Jack Bogle was one of the greatest forces for wealth democratisation the world has ever seen.  He allowed people a way to be free from the parasitical "financial advisers" whose only real concern are the fat fees they get from selling you over-complicated "products" that have caused millions of people all around the world real harm.”

• Tuan Phan, a board member of SimplyFI.org

"In an industry that’s synonymous with greed, Jack Bogle was a lone wolf, swimming against the tide. When others were incentivised to enrich themselves, he stood by the ‘fiduciary’ standard – something that is badly needed in the financial industry of the UAE."

Ziina users can donate to relief efforts in Beirut

Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”
