Twitter will not block controversial tweets by world leaders, the company confirmed following calls to remove Donald Trump from the platform over his sabre-rattling comments about the size of his nuclear button.
In a statement “World Leaders on Twitter”, the platform said it would not remove world leaders or censor their tweets because of their “outsized impact” on society.
“Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate,” it said.
The statement did not mention Mr Trump by name but follows his spat with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the ability of the hermit state to launch a nuclear attack on the US mainland.
In the latest jibe against the North Korean leader, Mr Trump denigrated the potency of the North Korean nuclear arsenal.
The comments prompted complaints that Twitter was providing Mr Trump with a ‘bully pulpit’ and the president contravened its terms and conditions that addressed violence and threats.
Mr Trump was criticised last month by the British prime minister Theresa May for re-tweeting three inflammatory videos posted by a far-right group.

In its statement, Twitter said that the company existed to "serve and help advance the global, public conversation" and therefore would not remove content from elected world leaders.
“We are working to make Twitter the best place to see and freely discuss everything that matters. We believe that’s the best way to help our society make progress,” it said.

Some of Darwish's last words
"They see their tomorrows slipping out of their reach. And though it seems to them that everything outside this reality is heaven, yet they do not want to go to that heaven. They stay, because they are afflicted with hope." - Mahmoud Darwish, to attendees of the Palestine Festival of Literature, 2008
His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
