Former US vice president Joe Biden scored an important win on Tuesday in the state of Michigan, expanding his delegate count and frontrunner status against progressive Bernie Sanders.

With six states voting on Tuesday, Mr Biden was projected by CNN to win Michigan, a state that Mr Sanders won in 2016 against Hillary Clinton and that Donald Trump won in the general election by nearly 10,000 votes.

With his win in Michigan, Mr Biden will add to his delegate lead (670) against Mr Sanders (574).

He also projected to win in both Missouri and Mississippi

A Democratic candidate needs 1991 delegates to win the nomination. Michigan offers the biggest delegate count of the six states voting on Tuesday with 125 delegates at stake. It’s followed by Washington (89 delegates), Missouri (68), Mississippi (36), Idaho (20) and North Dakota (14), all voting on Tuesday. Overall, the six states account for 352 delegates.

Both Mr Sanders and Mr Biden canceled Cleveland rallies on Tuesday due to coronavirus concerns. They are the first presidential campaign events to be called off because of the outbreak.
